Whew

Just finished 17,000 words plus in a fic that has bothered me and stalled for much longer than I want to admit. Still have to edit it, but it's all there.

I caught a student using chatgpt today. After realizing this, I am now fully aware that I have undoubtedly missed this in other papers. There have been some that have... I want to say bothered me. A student would struggle to write a basic sentence in a quiz or would obviously not be doing their work, then hand in an essay that was, to put it mildly, far too perfect.

I have just gone through using chatgpt in an effort to beat it by giving it the most esoteric prompts I could muster. Write an essay arguing Paul Rusesabagina is a hero. Argue in favor of five-year interval driving tests. What are the similarities and differences between plane travel and car travel.

In every case it kicked out something perfectly polished in less than a minute. It was deeply depressing.

So I tried leaving behind logic and went for creativity, something I was sure it would not be able to do. I told it to write a Frostiron fic involving a book, a phone, and a watch.

Which it did. Too damn well.

In one last

In a list ditch effort to prove there had to be something it couldn't do, I pulled out a poetry form that in my opinion is the hardest to pull off: the sestina. Then I gave it eight end words based on what I could see around my desk: tissue, candle, pumpkin, stapler, paper, pen, hand, and watch.

It proceeded to spit out a full sestina in less than a minute. Look at this thing:

In shadows cast by flickering candle's glow,
A solitary figure sits, pen in hand,
Beneath the steady gaze of the old watch.
Her thoughts like ghosts upon the parchment paper,
She seeks solace in the dance of flame,
Amidst the quiet hum of stapler's press.

With each soft whisper of the stapler's press,
She binds her words like threads of delicate tissue,
A tapestry woven by the flame's gentle dance.
Her muse ignited by the flicker of candle,
She spills her soul onto the empty paper,
Capturing time's fleeting moments in her watch.

Outside, the moon keeps time with silent watch,
As dreams and thoughts within her mind press,
Like leaves pressed between the pages of paper,
Or tears absorbed by a comforting tissue.
In the soft glow of the flickering candle,
She finds refuge in the rhythm of its dance.

As hours pass in the silent dance,
She marks their passage on the worn watch,
Her only companion the steady candle,
Guiding her through each thought's arduous press,
As she unravels emotions, layer by tissue,
And etches them onto the waiting paper.

The weight of her words upon the paper,
Is lifted by the flicker's gentle dance,
Each sentence wrapped in delicate tissue,
Protected by the steady beat of the watch,
Sealed together by the stapler's press,
As she continues to write by candle.

In the quiet hours before dawn's candle,
She completes her work upon the paper,
A creation born of passion's press,
And the muse's ever-changing dance.
With a sigh, she sets down her faithful watch,
And gathers her thoughts like fragile tissue.

In the dying light of the flickering candle,
She reads her words upon the paper,
A testament to time's relentless press,
Echoed in the rhythm of her watch's silent dance.

That last stanza, the watch's silent dance? Gathers her thoughts like fragile tissue?

It's better than anything I could write. Better than anything 99.99% of humanity could write.

I feel very depressed. We've all been replaced.

Okay. This year has been highly unusual. Like, off the charts. Not only is this the first time in a long time that I had no dead spots, I also completed several multi-chapter works, participated in two ficathons and pinch hit in one of them, and did an entire Advent calendar from Dec. 1-25 without missing a day (I did pull up "Sleeping Loony," which I wrote a long time ago but never posted to AO3 before, to fill in some spaces).

The upshot is I wrote ::drumroll:: 87 fics (not including one post on here on my head canon of Loki, but charting chapters of works separately). I have never written anywhere close to that in a year before. In 2009 I wrote 44, and 2008 was 40. Those were the next two highest, and I was double that. Yikes.

And they are... )

So, what changed? I'm honestly not sure. I think letting myself play with new fandoms helped. Three of these were for ficathons. Two others were inspired by other works (and "Sunset and Sunrise" spawned a fic by someone else, the first time that's happened that I know of other than one person using the format of MFTAM for a different fandom). I did comedy, angst, parody, romance, and sort of let things be flexible rather than rigid. I have more ideas that I can go back too, which I'm trying to remember to write down.

I also found I like to finish an entire multi-part fic before I start posting it. I might go through and edit it as I post, but I like the idea that it's basically done before I put it out there. I did that with "Hearts and Lies," "Incomplete Erasure," and "Apples and Eternal Love." I did it the other way with "Game Night" and "Christmas Special Night." Both can work, but those are more free-form rather than plotty, similar to MFTAM.

I've also come to the conclusion FF.net is just this side of dead, but in a weird way. People do read there, but comments are really sparse. AO3 does have kudos (though only 1 per fic, regardless of number of chapters), so that helps some, but it does seem like people don't do feedback much anymore. I tend to think Tumblr's format had something to do with this.

On the whole, it's been a heck of a year fic-wise. This one went pretty well.

ETA: Oh, and also, since he seems to be my muse at the moment, here's the not-really-a-fic, Weird Headcanons for Loki.

::stares at the fic I just finished::

What the heck did I just write?

I accomplished something I've wanted to do for several years but had never actually managed. I did the equivalent of NaNoWriMo. Kind of.

Inside of 32 days, I have written 51,843 words. I did not write a novel. Instead, I worked on a variety of fanfic/meta projects. They aren't mostly proofread yet, but the point is I actually can produce that many words in that amount of time. I did need a couple extra days, but that isn't too bad.

November is always a bad month for me to write because EVERYTHING is due at that time of the semester. This year, I actually had time in the spring. So... holy cow. I wrote. A lot.

You'll see new stuff coming out soon. And while that's happening, I'm going to write other stuff, hopefully.

I'm kind of happy about this. :)

Hmmm.

I'm attempting a weird version of NaNo. I haven't been perfect about it, but I've logged a dang high number of words since starting on April 7 (most of which have not yet been posted). Mainly, I'm writing whatever the heck I want, which has led to some really, really unusual pairings and friendship fics.

And this morning, I had a thought.

Okay, bear with me.

Loki/Oscar Wilde

Just sayin'.
bookishwench: (Default)
I think I just wrote the weirdest crossover ever.
bookishwench: (Default)
I'm attempting writing a massive xover piece as a little challenge to myself for the next month. However, I kind of liked writing a whole thing in one go then going back over it and editing before proofreading it, so it might be several weeks before anything shows up.

Also, why the heck did I just Loki/Titania?

ETA: And why am I seriously considering putting him a crossover with Casablanca?

ETA2: I'm now at 5 crossovers, including one that came out of nowhere, plus a standalone fic I might post later today. That's 6 days in a row hitting nano standards. Who am I and what have i done with the real me?
bookishwench: (Default)
What I intended to write: 1000-2000 word ficlet

What I'm actually writing: on page 27, nearing 10,000 words, and probably slightly over half done

ETA: Now over 17,000, still going.

I dug this out of an old LJ entry and thought I'd play with it.

1. How many words of fanfic have you submitted? 1,157,676

2. How many people have you on alerts? 51 on AO3, 358 on ff.net

3. How many people have faved you? I don't think that exists on AO3. On ff.net 511.

4. Which fandoms do you write for? I have 71 fandoms listed. The most numerous are Buffy, Angel, Harry Potter, Firefly, and Marvel

5. How many stories have you written? 211, but that groups together a lot of one shots (26 in The Jewel Box, for example)

6. Which story of yours would you recommend for people to read? "Muggle Fairy Tales Are Mad" is probably the most popular; "Jayne Eyre" (Firefly/Jane Eyre xover) seemed to have several people who liked it

7. Which story are you most proud of? Probably "The Alto," (Angel: The Series fic bio of Darla) because dang, lot of research and really freaking long

8. Which one was your biggest challenge? "Shadowed Lives" since keeping canon straight is rather tricky.

9. Which one had the most reviews? On A03, MFTAM has 758 (half of which are my replies), on ff.net 813, though that doesn't include the ones I eventually grouped in (that's 1294)

10. Which had the least? On AO3, Falling with 0 (newest one). On ff.net, "Yesteryear's Pleasures," "Do What You Wanna Do," and "First and Last" have 1 each; so does "Five Times Loki Cut Sif's Hair and One Time He Didn't," but that has only 3 of 6 chapters up so far.

11. Which story do you feel deserved the most reviews? I don't know about "deserved."

12. Which story was your longest? MFTAM is currently 284,104

13. Which story was your shortest? "Desdemona's Choice" is 336

14. Which story was a surprise hit? "Jayne Eyre" - Fanwank got hold of that one. "The Madness of Love," a Romeo and Juliet Mercutio/Romeo slash, also has a constant trickle of readers, which surprises me.

15. What story are you most known for? I don't think I'm really "known." I'm horrible about updating regularly, though.

16. What fandom are you most known for? Maybe Harry Potter now?

17. What pairings are you most known for? Spike/Dru, though I gravitate more towards characters than pairings

18. What is something you will never put into your story? Anything too graphic is probably a no.

19. What do you think your trademark is? Weird comedy and correct grammar.

20. Give us a hint of future stories!
Working on several: another MFTAM, kicking around a longer Frostiron fic inspired by one by STARS, a Sifki comic piece, a little of "Shadowed Lives" (I am horrendous at updating that) and soon, Yuletide.

I found a pin on Pinterest discussing writing, and how when someone was asked what they were writing about, they said something to the effect of, just fanfic, but it was pointed out that that's a genre, not what's it about. And I realized I've been writing about

-nightmares about past failings and the universality of that experience
-love for someone is never truly gone and a bit of that person remains permanently in the other's heart
-anger at family and beneath it is a desire for acceptance along with the concept of mortality
-friendship often means protecting someone regardless of the personal cost
-vulnerability can be manipulated and weaponized in both directions
-choosing one's own path in spite of sacrifices
-battling inner demons and that it's okay to ask for help rather than letting oneself be destroyed
-feelings of inadequacy and the desire to find acceptance and love
-love in spite of boundaries and the creativity to overcome them
-misogyny as a lethal force, the after-effects of violence, and the healing power of patience and love
-finding resiliency in dark times through friendship, humor, and an ability to recognize the absurdity of the world

So... yeah. That was affirming.

Voldemort needs a nose. So he tries to steal Rudolph's. Merry havoc ensues. Literally.

I saw [livejournal.com profile] ladyoneill playing with this, and before reading her answers and maybe getting ideas, I'm going to do this as well. Underneath is a series of questions to answer as a character you like to write. The list was originally made up here by [livejournal.com profile] sionnain. I'm really curious how this will turn out.

answers for Darla )

Wow, okay, that went to a few dark places. Think I'll give this one a go.

Spike )

Hmm. That was rather up down and all around.

Another one.

Angel )

Okay, guilt-ridden. I sort of figured that out.

Now for a very creepy one.

Drusilla )

Okay, that was just plain icky in places.

I think I'm going to leave it there now. Maybe next time I'll deal with characters who aren't, you know, either present or past tense serial killers.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] spikendru

If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNoWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favourite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

Okay, not even vaguely nuts enough to do NaNo in November of all insane months. Hmm. Stuff I'm working on.

The Bass: Liam (fair warning... rather R-ish, hence under here )

Found
“We’re talking about a vampire who once tried to drain a parking meter because she wanted to hear the coins clinking in her belly."

Broken
It was barely a word, more like the primitive call of a beast defending its mate.

Christmas Present
“Hey, how’s my favorite Yuletide cookie?” he’d asked, radiating the ridiculously high level of energy he always did.

As-Yet-Untitled
She quickly took a deep breath, waved her hands around frantically, and then slapped her index and middle fingers to her carotid artery, immediately finding a perfectly normal pulse.

The Soprano: Drusilla
Suddenly, a rent appeared between the clouds, low against the distant horizon, and there lay the moon, red as blood.

Essay: Drusilla's View of Family
Purely evil, she is also capable of a fierce, protective, fanatical love for those she considers to be her family, whether her own biological family or the vampires in her bloodline.

News
Torturing people generally wasn’t a great way to win friends and influence people.

As-Yet-Untitled
She laughed, a laugh filled with whiskey and smoke, then hopped on top of the dryer.

As-Yet-Untitled
She never actually saw him move, but the next thing she knew, Angel had hauled her over his shoulder and was carrying her, head downwards, back into the lobby like a sack of potatoes.

The Peaches Groom (Yes, I haven't forgotten this one)
Uh, well Sweet Bit, the Slayer and he, um… she was doing some of Peaches’s laundry and forgot to take his soul out of his pocket, and it shrunk really teeny-tiny in the wash and got stuck under the agitator.

Little Mirror
As though he were diving into a swollen river, he allowed himself to be swept in the direction the crowd was surging, propelled onward by the ever-increasing torrent of humanity.

RSVP
Nobody looks at the groom anyways,” she said, whisking the white piece of cardstock into an envelope, slapping a return address label in the upper corner, scrawling its destination in black ink, thumping a stamp in place, sealing the flap, and plopping it atop a tipsy pile of similar envelopes.

The Three Little Scoobies
He’d spent the last several nights casing the neighborhood and had come to the conclusion that anybody who would build his home out of fabric softener sheets might just possibly be an easy mark.

What's sad is I have another 4 I need to do yet. Eek.
