Immigrant children facing hearings alone

Back when I volunteered for USHMM, at one point I dealt with transcribing a manifest for a cattle car filled with over 60 people from Lodz, Poland. In that car was a little girl named Ernestyna. She was four years old and didn't know her birthday or place of birth when asked as those questions were left blank. Not a soul in that car had the same last name that she did. She was shipped off alone at four, in her case, to her death as the car went to Chelmno, a death camp which had a total of three survivors, all of them male adults. That was the paper that broke me. That child haunted me. I was sickened to think of someone taking an innocent little girl from her parents and shipping her off alone. I couldn't understand how this could possibly happen.
I think I understand now.
We are shipping children off alone.
I'm horrified.
